Have you ever wondered why some people seem to hear from God so effortlessly — while you're over here struggling, questioning, and second-guessing every single thing you think you received?
Here's what I need you to hear right now: You are not struggling because you're not called. You are struggling because you don't yet understand how you are wired to receive from God.
God does not communicate with everyone the same way. And once you understand your prophetic reception style — the specific way He designed you to hear from Him — everything changes. Honestly, it's like a light switch flips on.
In this post, I'm going to walk you through the seven main types of prophetic people and how each one receives communication from God. I'm talking about the Dreamer, the Seer, the Hearer, the Knower, the Feeler, the Prophetic Intercessor, and the Prophetic Scribe. And then — as a bonus — I'm going to reveal the most comprehensive prophetic type that most people don't fully understand.
By the time you're done reading, you're going to know exactly how God communicates with you.
I've Been Right Where You Are
Before I dive into the types, I need to be real with you for a second.
For the first ten years of my prophetic journey, I never spoke the words God gave me out loud. Not once. I only wrote them down. They were handwritten prophecies — lengthy, deep words — and honestly, I was afraid to speak them.
I thought something was wrong with me. I kept asking myself, "If I'm really called to the prophetic, shouldn't I be bold like the prophets in the Bible? Shouldn't I be speaking these words?"
But what I didn't understand at the time was that God had given me a specific way to receive and deliver His messages. I was a prophetic scribe. And once I stopped fighting that and embraced how God wired me, everything shifted.
Maybe that's you right now. Maybe you're comparing yourself to someone else's prophetic expression and thinking you're doing it wrong. Maybe you feel like you're not hearing God clearly because you're expecting Him to speak to you the way He speaks to someone else.
Listen — there is nothing wrong with you. You're just trying to operate outside of your prophetic reception style. And once you discover what type of prophetic person you are, it's all going to make sense.
First, Let's Establish the Foundation on How you Hear From God
So what exactly is a prophetic reception style? Simply put, it is the way you receive communication from God. It is how the Holy Spirit speaks to you.
Before I break down each type, I want to establish something biblically so you understand that this is not just for a select few people.
Acts 2:17 says: "And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams."
Every believer in this dispensation of time has the ability to operate prophetically. Dreams, visions, prophecy — all of this is communication from God, and it is available to you. So don't box yourself out before we even get started. You can hear God. You just need to know what type of prophetic person you are and how He has wired you to receive.
The Seven Prophetic Reception Styles
1. The Dreamer
A Dreamer is an individual whose primary prophetic reception comes through dreams. They receive divine messages and insights during sleep — often experiencing profound revelation and spiritual clarity in the night hours.
The biblical example of this is Joseph, the son of Jacob. His dreams in Genesis 37 — the sheaves of wheat, the stars bowing down — foreshadowed his future leadership and the reverence of his entire family. His dreams were not random. They were divine communication.
If you are a Dreamer, God speaks to you most clearly when you are asleep. Your dreams are not just dreams — they are messages.
2. The Seer
A Seer predominantly receives prophetic insights through visions. They can see spiritual revelation and future events through vivid visual experiences — quick flashes, movie-like images, or still pictures that drop into their spirit. Either way, a Seer sees. They hear from God through their spiritual sight.
Isaiah is a beautiful biblical example of this. His visions of God's majesty and holiness in the book of Isaiah inspired and anchored his entire prophetic ministry.
If you are a Seer, God shows you things visually. You see in the spirit realm.
3. The Hearer
A Hearer is blessed with an extraordinary ability to hear God's voice. They receive clear, direct messages, instructions, and guidance — whether through an audible external voice or a precise internal sound.
Think about Samuel as a young boy in the temple. In 1 Samuel 3, God spoke to Samuel by name — guiding him and establishing him in his prophetic calling. Samuel didn't even initially recognize the voice, but once he did, he responded.
If you are a Hearer, God speaks to you through sound. Whether audible or internal, you hear His voice clearly.
4. The Knower
A Knower is an individual whose primary prophetic reception comes through inner knowing. They receive sudden, intense impressions — spontaneous thoughts or insights about future events, people, and situations. It's that moment where you're like, "I just know we need to get out of here. I just know something is going on." You can't always explain it. You just know.
Daniel is the biblical example here. In the book of Daniel, he demonstrated a profound gift of knowing — interpreting dreams, understanding mysteries, and receiving insight into situations that were hidden from everyone else around him.
If you are a Knower, you just know things. You have this inner certainty about what God is saying — even when you can't explain how you know it.
5. The Feeler
A Feeler receives prophetic insights through strong emotions, impressions, and sensitivity in their spirit. They discern what the Lord is saying through what they feel. Really and truly, the Feeler is the discerner.
Think about the gift of discerning of spirits — that is connected to the Feeler. It is kind of wrapped into the same thing, and understanding that connection helps you articulate how God is communicating with you.
Jeremiah is the biblical example. He was deeply connected with his prophetic calling through deep emotional sensitivity — which is evident throughout his writings. His empathy, his grief for his people, his transparency — all of that was prophetic. He felt the word of the Lord.
If you are a Feeler, your emotions are your prophetic antenna. You feel what God is saying.
6. The Prophetic Intercessor
A Prophetic Intercessor is a person with authority to pray Spirit-led prayers. Intercession, on its own, is prayer on behalf of others. But prophetic intercession is something different — it is when you are praying things you literally did not know beforehand.
Somebody asks you to pray for their toe, and next thing you know, you are praying for their left arm and their head. The prophetic intercessor literally begins to pray things led by the Spirit — divinely imparted from God's throne. The Lord is downloading prayer points and prayer targets, and as you pray them, transformative shifts happen in the spirit and in the physical atmosphere. It produces a tangible realization of God's perfect will.
So prophetic intercessors pray the will of God because prophetically, the Lord is letting them know what His will actually is.
Abraham interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 18 is the biblical picture. Through his powerful intercession, he pleaded with God on behalf of the righteous in those cities.
If you are a Prophetic Intercessor, God speaks to you most clearly when you pray. The Holy Spirit downloads prayer assignments directly to you.
7. The Prophetic Scribe
Now — this one is especially special to me.
A Prophetic Scribe is gifted in recording and conveying divine messages, insights, and revelation in written form. It is called a scribe because it comes through writing. As they receive communication from God, they are compelled to write it out. The information comes, and they write.
Habakkuk 2:2 says: "Then the Lord answered me and said, 'Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.'"
A lot of times we misinterpret that scripture and use it simply as a prompt to write our personal vision. But in context, God was telling Habakkuk to write out the prophecy He had shown him. He was literally saying, "Write this out."
And then Jeremiah 30:2 says: "Thus speaks the Lord God of Israel, saying: 'Write in a book for yourself all the words that I have spoken to you.'"
The prophetic scribe writes out what God has shown them — for documentation, for personal reference, and when needed, to share with others.
If you are a Prophetic Scribe, you receive most clearly when a pen is in your hand or your fingers are on a keyboard. God speaks to you through writing.
This is where I started. For the first ten years of my prophetic journey, I never spoke prophetically. I only wrote. Handwritten words. Lengthy. Deep. And if you find yourself nervous or fearful to deliver what the Lord is showing you, trust and believe — that is normal. God is not mad at you for that. It is part of the journey. Sometimes we are nervous. And that is okay.
BONUS: The Prophet
Now — before I wrap this up, I promised you a bonus. And this is the most comprehensive type of all, so stay with me.
The Prophet is a chosen mouthpiece empowered by the Holy Spirit to communicate God's truth, word, and will to individuals, communities, and nations.
If you receive messages from God through most or all of these prophetic reception styles on a regular basis — and what you are receiving is not just personal — meaning the Holy Spirit is not just speaking to you about your own life, but He is talking to you about others, your family, your church, your city, your state — then you are operating at a different level.
Amen. If that is the case, it strongly indicates that you may be a prophet — especially if you frequently have visions and dreams.
Numbers 12:6 says: "If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision, and I speak to him in a dream."
So if God is showing up in your visions and speaking to you in your dreams on a consistent basis — that is a strong indicator. If you want to go deeper on this, I have a YouTube series called 25 Signs That You Are a Prophet that will really help you get clarity. You might realize you have all 25 — or some — or none.
Don't Let Your Reception Style Box You In
Here is the shift that changed everything for me — and I need you to hear it clearly:
Do not let your prophetic reception style limit you.
You might operate as a prophetic scribe for a season. You might move as a hearer, a knower, a feeler, a seer — all of the above. But don't box yourself into saying, "I'm only a prophetic scribe. I'm only a seer. I'm only a dreamer," to the point where you don't allow the Lord to maneuver through you the way that He wills.
Let the Lord use you as He wishes — not how you want to limit Him.
Amen? God is bigger than one reception style. And you are capable of far more than you think.
What It Actually Means to Operate in the Prophetic
Now that you know your reception style, I want to make sure you understand what it actually means to operate in the prophetic.
Operating in the prophetic means that you actively use your prophetic reception style to receive, interpret, and share prophetic revelation, insight, and messages that edify, exhort, and comfort other people. This may include warnings, correction, counsel, or direction — communicated in a way that makes sense in everyday life.
And that last part matters. It makes no sense to give someone a message that leaves them more confused than when you gave it. When you are operating fully in the prophetic, the person who receives the message walks away understanding what it is that you were trying to convey.
If you have not been able to do all of that yet — don't worry. That just means there is more growing to do. And I am going to help you with that.
