First, you will not see the terminology "Prophetic GIfts" written in scripture. However, I am referring to some of the spiritual gifts or abilities that the Holy Spirit gives to communicate a message from the Lord according to scripture. If you want to know more about prophetic gifts, keep reading.
Prophetic gifts are an essential part of the Christian lifestyle. If you are open and willing to see and hear, you can observe the prophetic throughout the scriptures and even in today's society.
"'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams." - Acts 2:17
God is pouring out His Spirit on all flesh TODAY! In this blog, we will explore five prophetic gifts mentioned in the Bible: Prophecy, Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom, Discerning of Spirits, Dreams, and Visions. The Holy Spirit empowers these gifts to edify, exhort, and comfort. As well as to warn, rebuke, guide, protect, and prosper his people.
Prophecy
Prophecy is one of the most well-known prophetic gifts, and it involves the ability to speak forth the mind and counsel of God. In 1 Corinthians 14:3, Paul explains prophecy's purpose is to "edify, exhort, and comfort" others. All believers can prophesy. Even Paul says he wishes we would prophesy in that same chapter.
Prophecy is more than just predicting the future but can also involve speaking God's truth in the present moment. When used correctly, prophecy can bring clarity and guidance to those seeking direction from God. Prophecy is one of the most potent gifts. It's so powerful that Paul encourages us to desire it. It can also be used to warn those in danger of straying from the path God has laid out for them.
Therefore, brethren desire earnestly to prophesy and do not forbid to speak with tongues. - 1 Cor 14:39 NKJV
Disclaimer: Everyone who prophesies isn't a prophet, but all prophets prophesy. Also, asking a prophet for a word from the Lord regarding the direction in your life is ok. However, that should not replace you seeking God for yourself. Just take a look at 1 samuel 9.
Word of Knowledge
The Word of Knowledge is a prophetic gift involving supernaturally knowing things that could not be known naturally. This gift is often used to reveal hidden sins in a person's life or to provide insight into a particular situation.
When I awakened to the prophetic, this was one of the ways God would give me messages for people. If you ever heard of the term "doom and gloom prophet," that was me. My friends used to hate to see me coming.
Word of Knowledge can be a powerful part of ministry, allowing individuals to speak into situations with accuracy and wisdom. It can also catalyze spiritual growth, revealing areas where individuals may need to seek repentance and forgiveness.
Word of Wisdom
The Word of Wisdom is another prophetic gift that involves applying knowledge and understanding practically to solve problems and make decisions. This gift is used to provide guidance in difficult situations or to help individuals discern God's will for their lives.
I have observed that many who have this prophetic gift may not even know they have it. All these people know is that people often come to them for advice, and whatever advice they give is sound and works. One of my mentors described this gift as wisdom and guidance from God.
The Word of Wisdom can be beneficial in situations of uncertainty or confusion. It allows individuals to receive divine insight and direction to help them navigate difficult decisions confidently and clearly.
Discerning of Spirits
Discerning of Spirits is a prophetic gift that involves the ability to discern whether a spiritual manifestation is from God, the devil, or human origin. This gift is used to identify false teachings and to recognize demonic activity.
Discerning Spirits is essential for protecting the church from false teachings and deception. It allows individuals to identify spiritual attacks and respond to them with spiritual warfare. This gift is significant in our current cultural climate, where false teachings and spiritual deception are rampant, especially in the apostolic and prophetic movements.
Disclaimer: This differs from the same discernment believers have as we mature in the spirit mentioned in Hebrews 5:13-14.
Dreams and Visions
Dreams and Visions are also prophetic gifts that are mentioned throughout the Bible. These gifts involve receiving supernatural communication from God through dreams or visions.
Dreams and Visions can be a powerful tools for receiving insight and direction from God. They can also serve as a warning or a call to action. When interpreted correctly, dreams and visions can give individuals a deeper understanding of God's will for their lives.
