Why Prophetic People Second-Guess Themselves (And How to Stop)

Prophetic woman praying and hearing God's voice with confidence

How do I really know what I heard is from God? What if it's me? What if it's the devil? What if I'm just making it up?

If these questions sound familiar, you're not alone. This is the constant battle many prophetic people face—especially when they're not yet secure in who they are. And honestly, it's exhausting.

Here's what's interesting: we never question our natural parents' voices. We know how our mother sounds. We recognize our father's tone. But when it comes to hearing God's voice? Suddenly there's a flood of opposing thoughts, mind traffic, and doubt about what we thought we clearly heard the Holy Spirit say.

I've been there. I questioned a lot of what the Lord was saying to me when I first started hearing from Him. I compared how I received communication from God to how others received it. I got caught up on the phrase "I hear God saying" because I didn't always hear an audible voice outside of myself. Instead, I would hear God through thoughts impressed upon my mind—things I could in no way possibly know on my own. But if I had gotten stuck on the fact that I wasn't hearing an audible voice, I would have never believed I actually heard from God.

The truth is simple: Once you really understand who you are to God and who He is to you, you will not second-guess yourself. You'll walk in surety, confidence, boldness, and clarity.

Here are five reasons why prophetic people second-guess themselves—and what to do about it:

1. They Don't Know Their Identity as Sons and Daughters of God

When you don't understand your position as a child of God, you'll constantly question what you hear. But the Bible says that if God is a good Father and we ask for bread, He would not give us a stone (Matthew 7:9-11). In other words, if you ask God to speak to you, He's not going to randomly let some false spirit come speak to you.

Yes, we need to be cautious because not every spirit is of the Lord. The enemy camouflages himself as an angel of light. But if you continue to be more demonically aware than you are Godly aware, that's the problem.

You as a child of God, knowing who you are, will cut out some of this second-guessing.

(Read Romans 8:14-17 and meditate on what it means to be led by the Spirit of God.)

2. Why Prophetic People Second-Guess: They Compare How They Hear God to How Others Hear Him

This is where so many prophetic people get stuck. You hear someone say they had a vision, and suddenly you feel like your "knowing" isn't valid. Or someone describes an angelic encounter, and you start to doubt the still, small voice you heard in prayer.

God speaks to each of us uniquely. Some hear audibly. Some see visions. Some just know. The method doesn't matter—what matters is that you recognize His voice when He speaks.

Stop comparing your relationship with God to someone else's.

(Reflect: How has God been speaking to you consistently? What is His unique language with you?)

3. They Focus on Testing Every Spirit Before Learning to Know the Holy Spirit

People want to jump straight to testing every spirit when they haven't even mastered knowing the Holy Spirit and how He speaks to them. There's a difference between discernment and constant paranoia.

Really and truly, the second-guessing is what keeps you from doing what God has called you to do. You can't flow prophetically if you're constantly interrogating every thought.

Learn God first. Then you'll recognize what's not Him.

(Study John 10:27 – "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.")

4. They Haven't Grounded Themselves in Scripture

When you discover who you are—your identity as a prophetic vessel—in the Scriptures, you'll be able to use what you know about yourself to combat the enemy when he tries to discourage you.

Jesus, when tempted by the enemy, responded with Scripture. Nehemiah, when false prophets came to distract him, knew God had told him to build the wall—so he wasn't easily moved. You need to know not only who you are and who God is, but also what you're supposed to do. That way, the enemy doesn't distract you.

Ground yourself in the Word so you can stand firm when doubt comes.

(Identify five scriptures that affirm who God says you are. Write them down. Meditate on them daily.)

5. They Let Mind Traffic Overwhelm the Voice of God

Mind traffic—floods of opposing thoughts that contradict what you thought you heard. This is normal, but it doesn't have to stop you.

Even now, I get mind traffic. Opposing thoughts still try to creep in. But because I know who I am, it doesn't stop me from flowing prophetically. I've learned to recognize the difference between God's voice and the noise.

The more you practice hearing God, the clearer His voice becomes.

(Ask yourself: What patterns do I notice when God speaks to me? What does His voice feel like versus the enemy's?)

Summary

You will stop second-guessing when you learn God. When you discover your identity in Scripture. When you stop comparing yourself to others. When you ground yourself in the Word and recognize the unique way God speaks to you.

This week, I want you to do something specific: Discover five things God says about you—five promises concerning you—and meditate on them. Get those Scriptures down in your spirit, all up in your soul.

Here's your first one: "My sheep know My voice, and a stranger they will not follow" (John 10:27).

Declare it: I know Christ's voice, and a stranger I will not follow.

Now find your other four. Let them sink in. Meditate on them day and night so you can stop second-guessing so often.
